Plot Summary

The narrative centers on ACP Dev Ambre (Shahid Kapoor), a brilliant yet rebellious police officer in Mumbai. After an accident leaves him with partial memory loss, Dev is tasked with re-investigating the murder of his friend, ACP Rohan D'Silva, a case he had previously solved but now cannot recall. As Dev delves deeper, he uncovers a complex web of deceit and betrayal, leading to a shocking revelation about his own involvement in the crime.

Production

The project was officially announced in May 2023, with principal photography commencing in October 2023 in Mumbai. The filming concluded by September 2024. The screenplay was crafted by the duo Bobby-Sanjay, with dialogues penned by Sumit Arora, Hussain Dalal, and Arshad Syed. Amit Roy handled the cinematography, while A. Sreekar Prasad oversaw the editing. ​

The film's score and two songs were composed by Jakes Bejoy, marking his third collaboration with director Rosshan Andrrews. Vishal Mishra contributed two additional songs, with lyrics by Raj Shekhar. The soundtrack includes tracks like "Bhasad Macha" and "Marji Cha Maalik," both of which garnered significant attention upon release. ​

Release and Reception

"Deva" was theatrically released worldwide on January 31, 2025. Despite the anticipation, the film received mixed reviews. Critics lauded Shahid Kapoor's performance and the technical aspects such as cinematography and editing. However, the screenplay and the altered climax, which deviated from the original Malayalam version, faced criticism. The film underperformed at the box office, grossing approximately ₹33.98 crore in India. ​
