The Next 365 Days is a 2022 Polish erotic drama film directed by Barbara Białowąs and Tomasz Mandes. Serving as the third installment in the trilogy based on Blanka Lipińska's novels, the film continues the tumultuous love story of Laura Biel and Don Massimo Torricelli, portrayed by Anna-Maria Sieklucka and Michele Morrone, respectively. Released on August 19, 2022, on Netflix, the movie delves deeper into themes of love, trust, and personal agency.
Plot Summary
The narrative picks up with Massimo grieving at the grave of his twin brother, Adriano, who was killed during the climactic events of the previous film. Laura, having survived the attack orchestrated by Adriano and Anna, is recuperating. Despite medical advice to abstain from intimacy during her recovery, Laura seduces Massimo during one of his business meetings, highlighting the couple's intense physical connection.
As Laura spends time with her best friend, Olga, she reflects on her near-death experience and contemplates her future. An unexpected call from Nacho, Massimo's rival who had previously captured Laura's attention, adds to her emotional turmoil. Nacho expresses remorse for his past deceit and confesses his lingering feelings for her. Although Laura rebuffs him, she admits to Olga her growing attraction towards Nacho, indicating a deepening internal conflict.
Seeking distraction, Laura and Olga attend a club, where Laura later reunites with Massimo. They engage in a passionate encounter after a private performance, but underlying tensions surface. Massimo remains troubled by Laura's previous escape with Nacho and harbors resentment over her not informing him about her miscarriage. Their confrontation escalates, with Laura accusing Massimo's family of causing her pregnancy loss.
The next morning, an attempt at reconciliation through intimacy falters as Laura's thoughts drift to Nacho. Recognizing her distraction, Massimo withdraws. He later visits a club with associates but refrains from infidelity, indicating his internal struggle. Meanwhile, Laura immerses herself in her fashion career, becoming a brand ambassador. An invitation to the Lagos Fashion Fair in Portugal provides her an opportunity to escape her marital woes.
In Portugal, Laura unexpectedly encounters Nacho, who is there for a surfing competition. Despite initial attempts to avoid him, their mutual attraction culminates in a passionate encounter on the beach. Nacho reveals he saved Massimo's life out of respect for Laura's feelings, emphasizing his genuine love for her and willingness to wait until she's ready.
Returning to her hotel, Laura faces a confrontational Massimo. She threatens divorce and requests space, prompting Massimo to acquiesce. Seeking solace, Laura visits her parents in Poland, confessing her uncertainty about her feelings for both men. Her mother advises her to prioritize her own happiness, especially as she approaches her 30th birthday—a symbolic reflection on the passage of time since meeting Massimo.
Haunted by dreams of a threesome involving herself, Massimo, and Nacho, Laura grapples with her desires. A warning from Olga about Massimo's knowledge of her affair with Nacho adds urgency to her decision-making. Resolute, Laura returns to Sicily to confront Massimo.
Upon arrival, Nacho poses as her chauffeur, professing his enduring love and willingness to wait. Laura acknowledges his feelings but remains undecided. She then meets Massimo on the beach, where he apologizes for his controlling behavior and absence during her miscarriage. Drawing from his father's wisdom about love and letting go, Massimo seeks Laura's decision regarding their relationship. The film concludes ambiguously, with Laura's choice left undisclosed, symbolizing her journey towards self-discovery and autonomy.
